- This directory contains four BASIC programs which demonstrate a
- variety of mathematical algorithms and techniques. Each program
- includes extra documentation and references for further reading.

- (1) Program GraSort shows in a visual format the execution of four
- well-known algorithms for sorting an array. These methods are :
-
- HeapSort - used internally by RISC_OS
- ShellSort - simple and reasonably efficient
- QuickSort - the fastest-known general-purpose sort
- SelectSort - inefficient but occasionally useful

- (2) Program PatMatch compares the performance of three procedures
- that search for all occurences of a selected test string within
- a text - the user can select either a language or random text.

- Knuth-Morris-Pratt (KMP) Search
- Boyer-Moore Search

- (3) Program Travels demonstrates the use of the modern 'simulated
- annealing' technique to attack the Travelling Salesman problem.
- This type of problem falls into a class which mathematicians
- call NP-Complete and is characterised by impractical optimal
- solution times for a realistic number of variables. However,
- near optimal solutions can often be found in a reasonable time.

- (4) Program ZerFunc searches for the complex zeroes of an arbitrary
- function of one variable using the Muller method which is much
- more robust than competing techniques such as Newton-Raphson.
- The progress of the iterative search is displayed graphically.
- The demonstration is set up to find the zeroes of a polynomial,
- but the internal documentation describes the modifications
- required to process a user-supplied function.
